Denial
Deep in her heart, Charlotte knew the truth: Eric would someday marry her, and live a quiet, domestic life in a small, cute house, spending their time raising three kids and working together in the garden. She knew that Eric said that he didn’t want anything serious with her, that they weren’t compatible in that way. But really, they already were in a relationship. Eric was her boyfriend in all but name, he just needed to admit it!
And now she was going to stand up for herself! She was going to insist that he acknowledge her to his friends!

This isn’t about a river.
I know you think it probably is. But it’s not, I swear.
It could have been. But I promised I wasn’t going to make this a joke, so I’m
NOT making it a joke. I’m being very serious, and I’d appreciate it if you could
take my effort seriously. I certainly am.
I could have asked you, “What did the Egyptian man think as he was
drowning?” But I won’t because that’s not what this is about.
I could have also responded, “Nothing, he was in DE-NILE!”
But I won’t.
Because this isn’t a joke.
